My Students

I teach a classroom of 18 energetic, enthusiastic, and motivated learners. Of the students in our school, 32% qualify for free or reduced cost meals, and 21% speak English as a second language. While this may seem like a barrier to some, my students accept nothing but the best from themselves and others. They are a passionate group that is eager to learn skills for the modern world.

Upon hearing about the idea of using robots to practice math and science, my class beamed with excitement.

In today’s world, math and science careers demand, at the bare minimum, a basic knowledge of computer programming. A class that loves spending their free time at home playing computer games couldn’t believe they might get to see what it takes to program a computer. This project will give them the opportunity to explore an area of interest while simultaneously preparing them for today’s society.

My Project

The purpose of this grant is to inspire engaged and thought-provoking learning in the fields of science, math, programming, and 21st-century skills. Today’s generation is highly motivated by the use of robotics and hands-on programming, as witnessed in past learning experiences. The use of Sphero robots fills the need of 21st-century computer programming exposure while seamlessly integrating a multitude of other learning standards for a unique learning experience.

The first objective is to expose the world of computer programming to my students.

That objective will be met if each child is able to get hands-on experience using the device controlled robots. The second objective is to meet cross-curricular standards through integrated activities. This will be a success if the post-tests during math and written response in science show proficiency in​ math/science standards. The third objective is to allow for team building skills to be practiced through STEM challenges and this will be met if each student is given the opportunity to work with a group to achieve the desired goal.
