This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am fortunate to teach a group of inquisitive 8th graders in Harlem. My students read a variety of texts throughout the year and we read in a variety of manners, whole class, small groups and independently.
They are a highly motivated group that are thirsty each day for new information and are eager to succeed.
Our charter school provides a classroom library for each grade, and our current library needs to meet the wide variety of reading needs for over 40 students. Our students range from those struggling to meet grade level and those who read far past expectation. We have students that can't put a book down as well as students who struggle to find a book they can connect with.
My Project
This year we are starting a new unit about dystopian novels. As a class, students will read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and explore how technology is impacting our society and debate the merits of censorship.
We need a robust collection of dystopian novels for students to explore during independent reading so that they can further their understanding of this genre.
In order for students to do a deep dive into the dystopian landscape, they need to be able to read novels from a variety of authors that feature a wide range of characters and situations they can connect to and find meaning with.
