This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Encouraging literacy and the joy of books is a priority in every classroom, and I want to give my students a designated library space in my classroom where they can read and enjoy books.
Currently, my students' library books are mostly board books, and they are stored in a basket.
This makes it difficult for them to see the books available in an organized fashion. When my students choose a book , they must take it to the carpet area to read. While using the carpet area as a place to read works, it is not ideal. We use the carpet area for group learning as well as other activities, so it becomes rather noisy and distracting to my students who want to sit and read quietly.
By donating to this project, you will be providing furniture designated for a classroom library and an organized way to display my students' library books. This will give my students a quiet space solely for reading where they can practice the three ways we can read a book: reading the words, reading the pictures, and retelling the story.
My students are truly special to me. I serve a wide range of abilities in my classroom. Many of my students will learn to read as a functional survival skill. Some of my students will learn to read and read for pleasure. And some of my students will simply always just enjoy the pictures. I want to give all of my students the opportunity and exposure to wonderful, beautiful books.
