Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a school in Florida. There are over twenty students in my first grade class. I specialize in educating children with limited English proficiency. Almost all of my students are Hispanic. Often, their parents work in restaurants and hotels. Our families cannot spend a lot of money on books for their children. However, our school system offers books to young children online. This project is about encouraging our children and parents to take advantage of this free online resource.
My Project
The project is very simple. Each month, our top readers will be rewarded with a trip to a Treats Box. This will contain tiny plush dogs and cats, plus colorful novelty pencils and erasers. We will also give the children diplomas. The winners will be photographed with their prizes and their diplomas, and their pictures posted on Facebook for proud moms, dads and grandparents to see. In order to earn a prize, students will have to spend a considerable amount of time online reading the free books. (The web site tracks their reading habits.) We will not reward the children who read at a higher reading level. We are rewarding the first graders who spend most time on the site. These prizes are for effort. Remember that most of my children are learning English as a foreign language, so their reading level, at first, will not be very high. Why is this project important? The Treats Box will motivate my students to read at home as well as at school. We all know how important home reading is to young children's academic progress. I am sure that the Treats Box will encourage first graders and their families to make full use of our free online books, and make the children even more successful in school.
