Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My speech and language scholars are neurodiverse learners who are eager to interact with their peers, teachers, and other members of the school community. They are unique, come from diverse cultures and backgrounds, and have a variety of strengths and challenges. For many, pragmatic language skills and social-emotional learning are areas of challenge.
Help my students build empathy and compassion by learning to see the world through the eyes of others, through the development of identifying emotions, reading non-verbal cues, and demonstrating perspective taking.
Teaching these valuable skills explicitly is essential. Using multi-modality learning tools and models, including visual and verbal supports, will help them see themselves and others as they explore life from differing perspectives. This project will provide hands-on resources, including books, conversation cards, emoji plushies, and interactive materials from TPT. We will use these tools to identify and understand emotions as well as non-verbal cues. The books will be used to define key ideas, such as empathy and compassion, while providing relatable examples and multiple perspectives. My scholars will learn to turn empathy into compassion by role-playing situations using the conversation cards and interactive Boom cards purchased using the TPT gift card. Success will be measured by their ability to identify emotions, explain empathy, and demonstrate compassion during role-play activities.
