The third grade students at my school are eager to participate in group activities on Fun Friday.
Our school is in a suburban/urban neighborhood with a mix of socioeconomic conditions.
We are surrounded by apartment buildings, small businesses, and homes both large and small. Students come from a wide range of cultural backgrounds including Hispanic, African-American, Korean, Filipino, Ukrainian, Middle-Eastern, East Indian, American Indian, Armenian, and many more. They are a curious and lively bunch.
My Project
We have recently started a program for third grade students to encourage responsible behavior. Students who bring in all homework and arrive on time at school during the week are invited to a variety of Fun Friday activities. All third grade teachers provide activities that include art, outdoor activities (we have provided Frisbees, footballs, parachute play for example), and building competitions. Students choose the activity they prefer. Many students have expressed a desire to have Lego days. I think it's a great idea.
Working with Legos encourages innovation and problem-solving.
Students engage in cooperative learning experiences that touch those of all backgrounds and abilities. Students are actively engaged in creative solutions that foster endless amounts of creativity and curiosity. There are many students who will be motivated to work on responsible behavior because working with Legos is a highly desirable activity.
