My middle school students can now choose from a stimulating elective titled, “Project Runway”. Students are showing great enthusiasm for fashion design. Every day, they arrive full of excitement for learning about fashion and creating wearable garments.
I teach visual arts in an inner city school district.
My students are a diversified group in economics, ethnicity and languages. Students have found a way to create and communicate on a variety of levels, even though their native languages are different. English learners need to quickly meld into a new way of life and learning. English speakers are empathetic and help non-English learners transition into our school culture. Using 21st century skills in the art room is a helpful experience for real world future events.
My Project
Project Runway students are working on a limited budget and have reached out to our school community for recycled items to be donated. They are creating by re-using unwanted items of clothing and accessories. We have had a generous item drive, but need the necessary tools to take this "upcycling" into modern fashion trends. My students arrive in the art room with enthusiasm to learn a new skill; that of fashion design. Each week they are taught a new fiber arts technique along with a new challenge. They embrace these challenges through diversified teamwork which leads to success. Their creations are judged by invited guests. Their public speaking skills are refined when judges questions, are answered. It give them and myself great sense of pride when “showing-off” their creations. This elective helps them express their individuality and enhance their self-confidence. I am proud and happy for them, when their faces light up with smiles and their eyes gleam with pride.
Donations to Project Runway will make a difference in my student’s life.
Please help middle school students focus their energy through positive expressions of their personal identity. Self-expression is very important to all teenagers, so why not help increase student self-esteem by donating materials that will help young people's ideas develop into real, exciting works of art! Small tools of fashion will result in great ideas for tomorrow's future.
