My students are a bright and brilliant group of young people who are in the process of learning to truly grow through their education and community. My group of students this year are such a unique group of individuals that have been celebrating each others' differences. I am extremely proud of the community that they are building and have seen them grow tremendously.
The school is located in a lower income area in the Silicon Valley.
Most of the students at the school receive free and reduced-price lunch. It is a Title I school in East San Jose, California with a high population of English Learners. Although we are lacking many resources, the fighting spirit found within the teachers and students push us further towards our goals.
My Project
My students are from a community that feels unheard and undervalued. Growing up in this community makes them feel the same way. As a teacher, I have always believed that a large part of my job is to make sure that the students feel empowered. Despite their circumstances, I believe that the future of the nation is inside my classroom. I want my students to truly believe that, as well.
Part 1 of the Empowerment Project series is requesting funding for items that will really help my students find their voices by making them truly feel heard.
Inside my classroom there are 8 table groups, which are named after the California public Universities. Each group would really benefit from having a microphone for when they present and share ideas. In class so far we have been working on using our "strong speaker" voices, but sometimes they are just not loud enough. Having microphones will help the students to project and make them truly feel like they are strong speakers. They will help give my students their voices by making sure that their voices are literally heard. These microphones also have the benefit of a recording option that can help all my student record themselves to help them improve their speech, which will especially help my ELS.
The stands will be used to keep the microphones on their table carts to use as makeshift podiums. Since these will be used at schools, where germs run rampant, we will also need these microphone covers for hygienic purposes. The first step to empowerment is helping the students find their own voices. Projects to follow will help them to use those found voices to reach outward in our community.
