Empowering Women in the Weight Room

My Project

More and more women are defying stigmas and stereotypes by hitting the weight room, aiming to boost both their physical and mental health through lifting.

In some respects, women’s fitness has finally reached parity with men’s.

It’s a lifestyle, a sanctuary, and a means for women to connect with others sharing similar goals. Increasingly, women are embracing the gym as a communal outlet.

With that being said, weight rooms are still lacking a heavy female presence. Co-ed strength and conditioning classes have deterred women from signing up due to fear of embarrassment, judgement, and toxic masculinity that stems from weight rooms designed for football players.

This year alone, we have 150 female and nonbinary students thriving in a class designed just for them— and the number is growing each year. Women’s Strength and Conditioning is a class where you find community, camaraderie, and confidence.

Now, we just need the equipment to sustain it! Much of the equipment in the weight room is too heavy for my students, and they are unable to progress safely. This equipment will encourage young girls to persevere and excel through the physical and mental challenges the weight room presents.
