My Project

After analyzing our standardized test score trends over the last couple of years, it has been a goal of our school staff to increase the vocabulary of our students and improve vocabulary usage. A co-worker and I participated in a training which introduced different ideas for classroom activities to improve students' vocabulary. We both found the ideas presented in the training to be very helpful in the planning of our instruction. We have already observed a difference in our students’ ability to understand and use the new words introduce.

We would like to use what we learned to provide a training to our staff on vocabulary instruction techniques in order to give our teachers some tools to use in the classroom.

This professional development will be for all teachers in grades Pre-K through Fifth grade, thus benefitting all students in our school.

We would like to purchase two books to distribute to each teacher. One, Bringing Words to Life by Isabel Beck, Margaret McKeown and Linda Kucan and the other, Uncovering the Logic of English by Denise Eide. These books will be phenomenal resources for our teachers to refer to as they plan reading and vocabulary instruction. Unfortunately our school's budget has been cut once again and there are not sufficient funds to purchase the books.
