Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The copies of They Called Us Enemy will provide my students with a compelling, visual way to explore an often overlooked aspect of American history—Japanese American internment during World War II. The graphic novel format will engage even reluctant readers, making this important history more accessible and relatable. Through the personal narrative of George Takei, my students will connect emotionally and intellectually with this historical event, deepening their understanding and empathy for experiences outside their own.

My primary goal is to inspire meaningful discussions, foster empathy, and help students see the value in learning about the diverse experiences that make up our collective history.

I want to encourage my students to think critically about history, question the narratives they’ve been taught, and recognize the importance of diverse voices in shaping our nation’s story. Ultimately, I hope this project will broaden my students' understanding of American history by introducing them to stories and perspectives that are not typically covered in the standard curriculum.

My students are special because they are curious, open-minded, and eager to learn about new perspectives. They come from diverse backgrounds, and many have not seen their own stories reflected in their education. They are thoughtful and willing to engage with challenging topics, but they need opportunities to explore stories that resonate with their own experiences and those of others. This project will help them feel more connected to the curriculum and show them that their stories and histories are important and worthy of study.
