I wanted to take a moment to celebrate their remarkable growth with you.\r\n\r\nThe past few months, our class has been focusing on Math I, and I've been genuinely impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication our students have shown. We've incorporated peg boards and headphones into our lessons, which has opened up new ways for students to explore and understand complex concepts. The results have been outstanding—students who were once hesitant to participate are now eagerly volunteering answers and asking deeper questions. Some have flourished with this approach, going from reluctant engagement to becoming a confident learner who takes on leadership roles in collaborative projects. These transformations remind me why I love teaching and why your support makes all the difference.\r\n\r\nBeyond academics, I've witnessed tremendous growth in our students' confidence and curiosity. While the purpose of this class is to provide students the opportunity to fulfill their California Graduation requirement for Ethnic Studies (beginning with the class of 2030), my colleagues and I are approaching it with the goal to bring inclusivity and diversity into our English curriculum. We want students to see themselves in literature- and not just because they are the same race- but because they are human beings.\r\n\r\nCrying in H Mart provides a wealth of opportunities as students read about the author's struggles being biracial and where she belongs. Her confusion with loving one part of herself while feeling as if she was betraying her other parent. Her conflict with her parents as she was growing up. Her journey in self discovery as an adult- and the constant new discoveries she faced. Then her grief and pain through her mother's illness and passing. Which led to more identity questions as she tries to hold onto her Korean heritage now that her mother is not there to guide her through the food they used to enjoy. Which culminates to her crying in an h mart realizing that she cannot call up her Mother to ask her questions about something as mundane as groceries.\r\n\r\nThis has led to beautiful class discussions about identity, community, and intersectionality. One of the most powerful revelations is the students realizing that we have more in common than we think and it is joyful to see them connect with each other in such powerful, meaningful ways. I believe that this is helping them connect to themselves, to others, and to future people they will meet. \r\n\r\nI have a student who recently experienced loss and has been experiencing waves of grief. He said to read Zauner's grief helped him feel not alone. Another student has discussed how at times he hated being multiracial because people would say that he was white-washed or didn't act black or Mexican enough which made him angry. But to see the author describe her struggles, it made him realize that he wasn't the problem, it was the other people and their preconceived expectations of who he was. When he shared in our Socratic Seminar that he felt more confident about who he was, it reaffirms my goals in teaching this class.\r\n\r\nThank you for your powerful donation. You are providing students with the opportunity to see themselves and others differently. It is opening up doors for their self acceptance. Students nowadays are used to visual stimuli so having the graphic novels brought a different level of engagement and enthusiasm. We studied how graphic novels offer a new level to analyze- not just literal words but also the images, cell shape, lack of cell boundaries, changes in text font, etc. \r\n\r\nI have been working on integrating Universal Design for Learning (UDL) with choice boards and also varying my lesson structure. We start by reading portions together, learning how to read a graphic novel with an analytical eye, then students have some assignments done with an elbow partners, small groups, or independently! They enjoy the variety which paired with their interest in the graphic novel has been very exciting!\r\n\r\nThere are many students who enjoy reading manga and I have already had students make comments such as, \"I never knew those things meant anything (like the cell shape or font changes)\" and \"I need to re-read *insert title* and see what I missed!\"\r\n\r\nTo see the students realize how literacy is everywhere is making them realize the importance of being engaged in the world they live in.
