Empowering Students Through Strong Characters and Diverse Books
Help me give my students books that represent them and strong characters they can see themselves in. My kids need books that can help them visit new worlds, and allow them a window into other cultures.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school where students are very eager to learn about the world around them.
They aren't just hungry for the answer to a question, they also want to know and understand the why and how behind the answer.
They look forward to rolling up their sleeves and "doing" the learning, and they are not afraid of a challenge! My school is located in a high poverty area where breakfast and lunch is provided to students every day.
My students take pride in attending our school and I work hard to build strong bonds and connections with each and every child. My students and I have worked together to create an environment where every student feels safe to share their thinking, even if they aren't sure they are correct. My students encourage their peers and cheer each other on when they need it the most. They never give up on themselves or each other! I strive to help my students see their value and take pride in themselves as individuals.
My Project
My students want to see themselves in the books they read. They are curious about the world around them, and I encourage them to learn as much as possible about everything they can. The diverse books I have requested will provide my students with access to a classroom library where they can learn about places beyond our classroom, and make connections with strong characters. I want my students to see beyond a single story, and open their eyes and minds to new worlds and characters.
"The single story creates stereotype and the problem with stereotype is not that they are untrue but that they are incomplete, they make one story become the only story."
