Empowering Students through Art: Painting to Classical Music
My students need oil paints and palettes to complete a project titled: Empowering Students through Art: Painting to classical music. The brushes and canvas will compliment.
"To draw, you must close your eyes and sing" Pablo Picasso
This quote describes perfectly the way my student interact with art and music. My goal is for them to experience music they don't normally listen to - classical. I teach art to autistic and special needs students. They love music.
The student I teach are considered to have special needs including autism spectrum and emotional problems.
They love sensory experiences. Many of them listen to music while they do their independent artwork, or we may take turns playing music for the whole group. They say it helps them concentrate. Up to this point, it is basically popular music that we have listened too.
I want to broaden their horizons, so to speak, and have them learn history as well. They need the oil paints and canvas and brushes to be able to complete this project. Most have not ever used the media of oil paint before, so it will be a great new experience! This project will impact 35 students.
My Project
Art and music have always nicely complimented each other, but it is while viewing art when music is most often associated with it. It has been said that music inspires creative outpouring without interfering with the process. I want to find out: could it be beneficial to painting as well?
The music I have chosen comes from a list of "10 classical pieces everyone should know". In other words, a great place to start with students, who because of lack of culturally-rich backgrounds, have had little contact with classical music.
My students will start each class period by setting up the donated materials, the oil paint and brushes, in a comfortable atmosphere in which to paint. I will use You Tube to create a song list for this project.
I will have each day's artist, title of piece, and time period on my overhead. I will play such classics as Beethoven's 5th and Chopin's Nocturne in B-flat minor. We will have a 10-minute cleanup time in which to discuss the music and our projects.
My students do not usually get to experience the cultural richness of fine arts and classical music.
I hope to help foster a lifelong love of both painting and classical music. The oil paints, brushes and canvas will all be new media for my students. I will have an exhibition with parents to view paintings and listen to the music.
