My students are proud members of Rosebud Indian Reservation. My students often do not understand the links between things such as writing and reading, or writing and math. It is difficult to have students who are wanting to learn, and yet some of the resources are not there. I have the usual eclectic bunch of students, however the problem is that many of them do not think that they will ever leave the reservation. One of the side perks of this job is that I get to teach them to dream. Their writing shows that they have dreams and can make connections to other subject areas. Some of them will be able to reach these dreams with a good education and a little bit of hard work.
My Project
Students always seem to love to learn about their culture. That's probably one of the reasons that we always teach about the Lakota culture through all grades. With the crochet needles and medicine pouches that I requested, my students will learn some of their cultural crafts and the significance of beading and the tales that each completed beading project has. A lot of our history is written in the bead work that is completed. This project will help me continue empowering students through art. My students need medicine pouches and crochet needles to help them learn about and practice their culture.
They will learn the history behind making these items and how each item tells a story.
Donations to this project will enable my students to see that others respect the work that goes on in our classroom. I will be able to empower them through Art.
The students will have a chance to experience using actual art materials, some possibly for the first time.
