Empowering Students Through Art in their PreK Quest to Excel
My students need white boards, dry erase makers, class set of markers, Write Start Colored pencils and to help them to be better organized we need seat storage sacks.
My students are acquiring the basic rules to become fluent readers. They are learning to use illustrations and words to share their ideas to collaborate with peers while working to complete critical and creative thinking activities.
Our school is located in Baltimore City Public School System.
Our school is Title I Targeted Assistance School and most of my students receive free and reduced meals. My students are kind, hard-working and show incredible perseverance in the face of many odds. They are enthusiastic about everything we do in school. Our school community is close-knit, with many involved parents and partners pitching in. Many of my students will enter kindergarten below grade level. Their oral language skills and vocabulary are well behind those of their more affluent peers, and they will need extra support in order to end the year on or above grade level. However challenged, my students are extremely motivated to experience the world first hand and are on their way to become lifelong learners.
My Project
Empowering Students Through Art will nurture Creativity, Critical Thinking, and foster Collaboration. Art will also add the ingredient of innovation to our Pre-K Classroom. They will do real world connections and use art to communicate their findings to their peers. The Crayola Markers and Colored pencils are ideal because of the age appropriateness of the materials allowing for many creative results. This will allow us to explore "Art without the mess" on a regular basis. The white boards will really help my Pre-K students in class with fine motor skills and to help me save paper as they can be used over and over again. Students can work as a pair or a team to help each other answer questions. All of these supplies can then be stored out of the way behind their seats in their seat storage sacks. Students will explore together different topics, including: Healthy habits, Community Helpers, Families, and Seasons.
Donating these materials to my classroom will help my students learn to love and appreciate not only working together but the arts, too.
This will support not only their literacy skills, but also their creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and ability to communicate with others. Funding this project of "Empowering Students Through Art" will push these students on to the next level.
