Empowering Readers Through Representation

Help me give my students culturally relevant books that reflect their experiences and aspirations. These bright youth, ages 13–18 in juvenile detention, enjoy reading and deserve literature that helps them see themselves and their potential.

My Project

This project supports student access to culturally relevant literature that reflects their identities, experiences, and aspirations. My students, ages 13–18, are educated in a juvenile detention center and have often experienced significant interruptions in their schooling due to court involvement, placement changes, and other life challenges. National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results continue to highlight persistent reading achievement gaps for African American students, underscoring the need for engaging literacy resources that connect students to reading in meaningful ways.

When students see themselves in the books they read, they are more likely to engage, persist, and grow as readers.

Culturally relevant novels, graphic novels, and memoirs featuring diverse voices will increase reading motivation, strengthen vocabulary, improve comprehension, and support critical thinking. These texts will provide opportunities for discussion, reflection, and connection while helping students rebuild confidence in their academic abilities. My goal is to improve literacy skills, foster a love of reading, and empower students to view themselves as successful learners with promising futures.
