Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Middle school is a critical time for both physical and cognitive development. Our students are truly starting to make choices on their own, they are developing a sense of purpose and character, and are setting the stage for what their future will hold. Our students are extremely diverse in both their cultural backgrounds and their economic situations. While their pride and ownership in their community has improved, there is still a long way to go.
Technology is their world right now, and while there are opportunities to be exposed to healthy choices through technology, most of our students have not taken advantage of these technological advances.
As this is a crucial time for our students to begin making healthy habits that can develop into lifelong fitness, it is imperative that they are given the chance to utilize these technologies.
My Project
The middle school years are challenging. Their bodies are changing, their hormones are raging, they are being faced with decisions for the first time that could have truly serious consequences. They are learning who they are, what their values are, and are shaping what their future will become. While middle school students have always been influenced by their peers, the pressure is even greater now with social media where everything in their lives is being exposed and analyzed by their classmates. Technology is their world, and while there are so many exciting new options for developing healthy habits using these tech tools, this is not what our students are choosing to do. We need to show them that not only are these tools available to them, but how fun and effective they can be.
This is an influential time in their lives, and it is our goal to give our students exposure to healthy habits that will develop into lifelong fitness by participating in the 100 Mile Club where they will run 100 miles during the school year.
We need these pedometers so that the students can track their mileage in this program. Imagine the impact we could have if this went viral instead of the next harmful "detergent pod challenge". We will be using the pedometers in class during Physical Education, but also during community running events on weekends such as open group runs and even 5k's. With our large class sizes and limited class time, these pedometers would maximize activity time for the students, while keeping the challenge honest. It is a great motivator to see how quickly your steps add up into miles, and your miles into so much more. It would also show students a relatively inexpensive fitness tool that they could utilize their entire lives.
