Empowering Others Through Literature

My Students

This year, I am teaching AP English III, which is World Literature. I would love to use Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston to give students a female, African-American author’s perspective. This novel was written in a time period where females and African-Americans in general were not given a voice and Hurston uses her voice to challenge the gender norms during this time period.

My students are taking this class to challenge themselves and become more critical thinkers, and I would love for them to have this opportunity to read a novel that shows them that anyone, despite what others may say, has a voice that deserves to be heard.

They are such brilliant young adults and deserve to have the ability to read this classic novel.

My Project

This novel will impact my students learning in multiple ways. Students will learn about ways to overcome racism and sexism through their voice, which is more powerful than they could ever believe.

I want my students to know that their voices matter, and they have the ability to impact others, which this novel can help them realize.

Zora Neal Hurston said, “Sometimes, I feel discriminated against, but it does not make me angry. It merely astonishes me. How can anyone deny themselves the pleasure of my company? It’s beyond me.” Through her language and voice, she was able to recognize that although she knew she would be discriminated against, she was still worthy, and she clearly loved herself.

This novel explores what love is and is not, the balance of power and authority, and various ways that discrimination affects others. I look forward to my students analyzing this classic novel.
