This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In urban environments, ESL students face unique challenges.

Incorporating journal writing and exploring "The Freedom Writers Diary" can be transformative.

My juniors will be starting a new path very soon, they will be seniors next fall and have to start planning their adult life. I strongly believe this will help guide them. They can use what they learn through journaling to plan their goals, acknowledge their growth and reflect on their life experiences. These students are really great and deserve to know just how capable they are of creating the life of their dreams. I plan to continue this project with any junior classes I teach in the future as well.

"The Freedom Writers Diary" offers ESL students a powerful narrative of resilience and empowerment, showcasing the transformative impact of education and storytelling. By engaging with this book, students can find inspiration, validation, and a sense of community within their own experiences. Furthermore, learning how to journal and incorporating journaling in class provides ESL students with a safe space for self-expression, language practice, and reflection. Journaling allows students to articulate their thoughts, emotions, and experiences, enhancing their language skills and fostering personal growth. Through these activities, ESL students can develop confidence, resilience, and a deeper connection to their learning journey.
