While we originally planned for students to take the packs home, we adapted the project to meet our students' needs in the moment.\r\n\r\nOnce the supplies arrived, the students in our Multicultural Club eagerly helped sort and package the items. They took great pride in organizing each bag, and though we didn't take photos of the sorting process, we captured them delivering the completed snack packs to key access points throughout the school. The packs were distributed to the principal, vice principal, nurse, social workers, and counselors' offices—making them available to any student in need, discreetly and respectfully.\r\n\r\nSeeing the students deliver the snack packs was truly rewarding. They felt proud knowing their efforts were directly helping classmates stay focused, energized, and supported throughout the day. Many students commented on how meaningful it was to contribute to the well-being of others in the school.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for our students are to continue supporting initiatives that strengthen community and care at our school. We are hoping to receive larger food items that can be shared by families so that we can make grocery bags to be given out before the Christmas break. This project also inspired conversations about empathy, teamwork, and service, lessons that go far beyond the classroom. I did not anticipate the level of interest and excitement that students showed in this compassion project. First of all they jumped and shouted when I told them the packages for the field trip had arrived, and they opened the boxes with so much excitement. \r\n\r\nWe spent 3 class periods organizing and packing 80 blessing bags with items from this project as well as other items we collected. Then, we went to a local improvement and development center where residents from the community comes for a hot meal on a daily basis. As you can see from the pictures, we set up a Newark Tech station and the students basically managed the station with so much enthusiasm, delivering these blessing bags to those who came by. I was very pleased with how mature and caring they were when interacting with the community members. \r\n\r\nWe are continuing with the extended learning activities for this compassion project. Students will write a journal entry to describe their experience and also, to identify areas in education and social justice where compassion and empathy could make a difference. So they will be composing a report on their findings. Again, thank you so much for the part you played in making this project a huge success. I had 10 students this summer, with 3 who failed and needed to remediate their failure, and the rest who were taking it for credit. It was a very diverse group, with some barely speaking English (And giving my Spanish a workout!) and some perfectly fluent, but struggling with their math skills! \r\n\r\nThe supplies you sent allowed me to give them each a notebook, pencils, graph paper, regular paper, calculator and a folder, which meant that I could give them opportunities to graph, to do challenging problems, to learn, take notes, and all the sorts of things students need to do in a challenging class. Furthermore, you all allowed me the materials to take the entire class off-line, with no need for electronics, electronic grading, or use of AI. This meant that I could ensure that they were actually learning, and that they were actually comprehending and wrestling with the problems in a way that both forced them to learn, and displayed their learning properly. \r\n\r\nStudents started with great trepidation at the math that they had to learn, the equations, the concepts, etc. They ended the summer having learned not just how to parse difficult concepts, but also with measurable and visible progress in their mathematics skills!","fullyFundedDate":1743333009617,"projectUrl":"project/helping-supply-summer-physics-in-newark/9183792/","projectTitle":"Helping Supply Summer Physics in Newark","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Johnson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6181755_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1736369027089","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6181755"},{"teacherId":9426969,"projectId":9111378,"letterContent":"Your contribution to these No Fear Shakespeare Graphic novels is greatly appreciated. Shakespeare writings are usually difficult for our Multilingual Learners, so the ability to have these novels written in a language that they can actually understand is a dream come true. Normally when I announce that we will be reading a play by Shakespeare there is usually a loud groan, but this time I just announced that we have new comic books and pointed to the open the boxes. The students rushed over to the boxes and exclaimed in delight. It wasn't until after they started reading that they realized it was a Shakespearian play, and by that time they were already fascinated by the graphics. \r\n\r\nAlthough we received these novels late in the school year, we started reading them as a class anyway. We chunked the reading into scenes and they read in groups so that they could act out the scenes after reading. The ability to see the expressions on the characters faces and their body language helped to bring some of the important concepts and themes such as love, anger, pride, loyalty and humor home.
