This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am writing to request funding to purchase two class sets of the novel "I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter" by Erika L. Sánchez for my classroom. My students are a diverse and vibrant group, each bringing their unique skills, talents, and interests to our diverse learning community. They hail from varied cultural backgrounds, with a significant portion identifying as Latinx. Their eagerness to engage with literature that reflects their own experiences makes "I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter" an ideal addition to our curriculum.

"I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter" is a particularly impactful novel for my students because its exploration of themes such as identity, family dynamics, and cultural expectations resonates deeply with many of my students, providing them with a mirror through which to reflect on their own lives and experiences.

By seeing themselves represented in literature, they will feel validated and empowered, fostering a sense of belonging and pride in their heritage. The novel also offers rich opportunities for critical analysis and discussion, allowing my students to hone their literary analysis skills while exploring complex social issues. Through guided class discussions, collaborative activities, and writing assignments, they will deepen their understanding of the text and develop their critical thinking abilities.
