Empowering Kids!

My students need the 10 Golden Sower nominees and book bins. They will each read 4 of these books and vote for the best book. The title receiving the most student votes wins the award.

My Students

There is nothing I enjoy more than curling up with a good book and immersing myself into the adventures and stories of characters. I wish to instill this same love of reading in my students. When they take part in the process of selecting the Golden Sower winner, they will be empowered & motivated.

My students are eager, diverse learners who enjoy coming to school each day, and who I love to see come into my room.

Many of them come from unstructured home lives, so I strive to make my classroom a "second home" of stability, learning, and safety for my students. My school is considered high-poverty and many of my students do not have much academic support at home. Despite their struggles, they are motivated to learn and continue to make great academic progress.

My Project

Since many of my students do not have books of their own, I have worked to build a large classroom library. I spend a great amount of time steering my students towards enjoyable books, modeling reading behaviors, and giving them an opportunity to learn to love reading in a school setting. The materials I have requested will supplement my classroom library and make it organized for student use. The plastic storage will help me to further organize my library according to genre, so that students can more easily access books that are interesting to them. While the school library will have a copy of each nominated book, students always experience long waits and some never get a chance to read nominees as there is only one copy. By having my own set of nominated books, I can ensure that each child has the opportunity to read at least 4 titles so that they are able to vote on their favorite book and get a chance to take part in the process of selecting this year's Golden Sower winner.

When students are given a voice, they feel empowered and motivated.

They will be reading multiple texts and improving their comprehension and fluency. I strive to motivate and empower children to love and find success in reading. It is common knowledge that students who are great readers, spend a good amount of time each day reading materials they enjoy. I believe all students have the potential to become great readers, and that it is my job to do everything I can to help them become great.
