My Project

High School is hard in any language, but imagine being new to the country and having to navigate a new culture, a new community of people, and a new language? Now imagine doing all of this at the age of 13 or 14! This is the daily reality of my English language learners, students with deep and thoughtful ideas who sometimes need help getting the right words out.

That's where the iPad comes in: With these devices, students can translate new words, have text read aloud, practice speaking with less pressure, and display what they have learned through videos, visuals, and interactive work.

Instead of staring at a worksheet in fear, they will have the tools to complete classroom tasks with confidence.

Rest assured: we will NOT be using these devices to play games. We WILL be using them to practice correct pronunciation of words like "through," "though," and "thought" (talk about a tongue-twister!). We WILL be using them to practice syntax and grammar (such as the daunting past tense for irregular verbs), and we WILL be using them to translate difficult content-related vocabulary.

In short, these iPads will give our students consistent access to language learning tools that actually meets their needs. By supporting this project, you will be giving our multilingual students a voice and a chance at excelling in high school. You will be helping our students learn, laugh, and--most importantly--be heard.
