My students are all learning English as a Second Language in the fifth grade. These children are incredibly motivated to learn even though life's hardships have impeded in their progress for the beginning years of their lives. Hardships such as interrupted informal education, being poverty stricken and acquiring a new language and culture! Almost all of my student's families have immigrated to the U.S for a better life. They have already overcome a lifetime worth of trauma and yet they are still eager to learn and grow!
My students look at our classroom as a sanctuary.
Every day they come in excited, eager, and ready to put their daily positive affirmations to use. During our Bee Family morning meeting the students reflect on their purpose by chanting Rita Pierson's famous mantra, "I am somebody. I was somebody when I came. I will be a better somebody when I leave. I am powerful and I am strong. I deserve the education that I get here. I have things to do, people to impress, and places to go."
Their burning desire to learn is why I try to give them the very best education that they can get.
My fifth graders are kind, courageous and eager learners! I am hoping to take their eagerness to comprehend literacy at higher levels. We are in need of these specific tools that they will be using to help them dive deep into fiction and non fiction texts.
They love using highlighters and sticky notes to Dive Deep into their texts!
Highlighting helps comprehension, writing and test-taking skills. They will be learning to highlight key details and key information. We will use the sticky notes to text evidence and apply it to make meaning! Lastly, we will be using the colored paper to print our final projects for display and in our student portfolios!
