My goal as I have taken over the science and math departments at our high school is to make both departments more engaging with hands-on activities and laboratory experiences. We have 3 science teachers and 2 math teachers whom have all bought into my philosophy that if students are more engaged working with their hands, they will also be able to understand the concepts better. So I have been working furiously to try to find ways to equip each of our classrooms with equipment and supplies that will allow us to stretch our students problem solving, get them up and moving, and finally work on real life hands-on activities. The hydrochloric acid, Mg ribbon, and zinc will be used for numerous Chemistry and Physical Science labs. The plastic bottles, 250 mL beakers, 100 mL beakers, vials with lids, and test tubes will allow us to store chemicals and mix substances which we can then keep fresh for years to come. The scales and hot plates will provide us with enough of each to outfit each classroom with at least 5 scales and 5 hotplates. The expo spray and markers will be used with our personal whiteboards for calculations and data collection for each student.
The over-arching goal is to get students off of their devices and working in a lab to be more engaged and learn real world skills that can be applied to either the work field or going on for more education.
These supplies will allow us to get our students real lab experiences every week in both mathematics and science. If students are engaged, they are learning and they will want to be at school. My goal is to make our school the one every staff member and student wants to be at!
