Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever walked the footsteps of a child who recently arrived to the United States? Have you ever wondered what it is like having to process new information such as culture and language? How long does it take to assimilate to a new environment? When does one really feel at "home"?

On a daily basis my school district opens its doors to dozens of students from many parts of the world.

These children are highly motivated and ambitious to learn while slowly acculturating to a new world. They enrich our curriculum and community with language and culture. They are the future!

Our motto? Two voices, one world! ¡Dos voces, un mundo!

My students participate in a dual language program, which allows them to maintain their native language while acquiring proficiency in a new target language. They are a diverse population in terms of gender, race, culture, religion, and socioeconomic status. The majority of the students come from families that fall below the poverty level and receive free or reduced lunch.

My Project

I recently switched a few traditional seats to flexible seating (yoga balls, wobble disks, small sofa), and the students have really enjoyed using these seating arrangements. The idea of creating a more comfortable classroom environment has been my main goal, and I’m truly hoping that my classroom can be completely converted so ALL students can have alternate flexible seating.

Flexible seating provides students with opportunities in taking charge of their learning and making effective choices.

They’re able to use flexible seating arrangements that work best for them when completing independent and/or collaborative tasks. My students are provided with much flexibility in regards to the use of classroom space and seating accommodations: yoga balls, wobble disks, sofa, and traditional metal chairs, and small pillows. I’ve noticed significant improvement in collaboration, engagement, and responsibility ever since they’ve been given choice. They’ve enjoyed the flexibility and responsibility in choosing their preferred seating.

The selected products will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The wobble stools will sit kids at desk and/or tables of their choice.

I truly believe a homey classroom enhances productivity and desire for learning. Students emotional well-being and academic successes are key components to bright futures! Thank you for being a part of this endeavor!
