Empower Our Language

My students need electronic dictionaries to empower them as they acquire fluency in the English language during classroom instruction as well as during testing.

My Students

My English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom is a revolving door for students who are excited about coming to a small group setting to enhance their English language skills. They feel safe in my room with other English Language Learners. It is our goal for them to become fluent in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

"Never Stop Exploring" is a quote hanging on the outside of the door to my ESL classroom.

I work with many different students from countries around the world such as Mexico, Honduras, Cambodia, Sweden, and China. I strive to help them take pride in their culture and continue exploring the world, language, and education. Although our ESL population is small compared to some schools around us, we are growing in number each year. Some of our students have been in the country since birth and others come to us brand new with no English at all. Some have great backgrounds in their native language while others have poor educational experience to connect with. Our goal is to develop English fluency in our students while encouraging them to maintain their first language.

My Project

My students will use these electronic dictionaries during instruction as well as during testing situations. They will be able to look up a word that is keeping them from understanding the content that we are teaching. Our students are more likely to use these electronic dictionaries than traditional dictionaries. Sometimes traditional dictionaries take our students too long to locate a word. They become stressed, tired, and give up on finding what they need to comprehend the content of instruction. To find a word with an electronic dictionary is much faster. The student will simply type in the word they need and the definition pops up. It is also helpful because the electronic device reads the definition aloud to the student. Hearing the words read aloud is critical and so powerful for our English Language Learners.

Success!

Our students will feel more confident and successful in developing the English language. I firmly believe in teaching them English in a fun way that is not so overwhelming. Our curriculum moves at such a fast pace, that our kids can shut down and give up. It is my goal, passion, and purpose to teach English fluency, help our kids feel success, and show them that speaking two languages is a gift they should be proud of!
