This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Special education students need more math interventions, support, and visuals to better learn. Often, math is an afterthought but I'm hoping to make our classroom more empowering for my learning support students. Working with individual students, groups of 4-6 at a time, allows me to support these students, but having more supplies in my Title I school will better allow me to help them.

Students with special needs need to be seen as future mathematicians and need support in mathematical thinking for life skills.

These mathematical computation and thinking skills are vital for understanding money, addition, life skills, and for their futures. These math manipulatives will help me teach kindergarteners to fifth graders basic math skills in more tangible ways. Rather than doing PowerPoints or worksheets that are hard to understand, they will be able to better use manipulatives to move concepts into groups. As a first-year special educator, I do not have many resources to give and this will empower my daily lessons with my students! Many of the resources in the cart are specialized whiteboards with number lines, whiteboards with multiplication charts, magnetic flashcards, math manipulatives, and cubes so that students can have more tactile work. It's also a bit more environmental as we won't have to print as much paper. These tools also give us a more sense of routine and can be used in all of my grades and special education groupings.
