My students are intelligent and hard-working. As 10th graders, they are beginning to develop a strong sense of identity in the world. They love to talk about themselves and I love to read literature with them that helps them think outward: to think critically, develop empathy, and figure out how to be good humans in the world.
Each of my 10th graders will ready at least 3 books on their own throughout the year.
This donors choose will help them find books they can love, to spark their love for reading!
These books will enrich the classroom library I have for students. All my students practice metacognition with independent reading throughout the year. Many students say they haven't read for fun in years, and they are surprised by how much their reading progresses throughout the year.
By having a set of diverse, interesting, and relevant texts, my students are even more likely to truly engage in their reading and improve their abilities.
A lot of the time, the books and authors available in classrooms or in the curriculum do not match the students' experiences or identities. Having a wider selection of culturally relevant texts will create a more genuine experience for my students.
