My Students

Every year there's something new.... Now we have to be Emotionally Responsive to students. This means getting in touch with students' feelings. "Why are you feeling this way today?" "Is there something that is bothering you?" Well as teachers we need to tap into our students' emotional well-being.

In Kindergarten, children are eager to learn.

They don't quite know about their emotions yet. They do know, for example, how to express their emotions physically through hitting and crying. However, expressing their emotions verbally is what I am looking for. Some may say it is the guidance counselor's job to do this. However it is becoming more of a teacher's responsibility to teach about emotions and how to handle things that might bring negative, as well as positive, emotions. Because, as we know, when a student's emotions are out of whack I can't call on the guidance counselor every time. I need to handle that problem right then and there. So what could be a better way to tap into my students' emotional side than through books and dolls?

My Project

How can dolls help students with their emotions? Well, dolls will help with their emotions because they have to care for them as if they were parents. They have to feed them, cloth them, tell how their doll is feeling, give them a birth date, give them an age, etc.. These dolls are part of the curriculum. Through dramatic play, (sort of a realistic play) students will learn how to express themselves through their dolls. Studies have shown even the boys love having their dolls in the classroom. Every child has one, the beds are simple shoe boxes that the children can decorate and it will change the lives of my students. Students will be able to express themselves much better with these dolls, they will have a sense of ownership and belonging to the classroom. Students will learn how to deal with situations that are out of their control.

Your donation will help my class with behavioral issues and emotional issues and will give children a sense of belonging.

Too many children don't feel connected to their classrooms, peers and teachers. These dolls will make a difference.
