The junior high school art class that I teach is the first fine arts class my students have ever had. My students live in a small rural community and attend a fairly small school. They attend a school that functions as a public school, but is part of a charter school district.
Although their exposure to art has been very limited, my students are eager, and highly motivated to learn.
I am the only art teacher in our district and I do my very best to provide my students with high-quality art experiences. They absolutely glow when I teach them a new art skill or teach them to use art materials to which they have not previously had access. They often bring their friends and families into the art room to see what they are creating.
My Project
My students need good quality art supplies to create art journal pages and collages. Collage is a foundational activity in art. It provides students with a vehicle for visual storytelling and self-expression. It also helps them develop design skills like composition, unity, contrast, balance, and emphasis. Students will use the beautiful washi papers, tissue papers, and collage papers to add shapes, colors, and textures to their collages. The stencils and inks will allow me to teach the students how to layer shapes and patterns in art journals and collages to add interest, depth, and texture to their work. The gesso will be used to prepare our surfaces to accept a wide variety of media and the gel mediums will seal the final products.
As students advance in the art, it is very important to provide them with materials that give them the opportunity to push the boundaries of their creativity.
Collages and art journal pages are constructed from a wide variety of materials and it is a challenge to assemble the assortment of papers, adhesives, inks, and paints students need in order to have a measure of artistic freedom to develop and render their ideas.
The items requested in this project will provide 120 students with a variety of materials to make beautiful, creative art.
