I am a first grade English Language Development teacher in San Francisco's Chinatown. However, I have been mentoring and meeting with some fifth and fourth graders in helping them develop their character and self-esteem. A majority of the school's students receive free lunch and do not have a positive role model who is interested in their well being. A majority of the school's population are Chinese and Latino Americans with immigrant parents who are supportive of their child's education but lack the English language skills. I provide a place for the students to just talk (and it's nice especially since I'm not their classroom teacher) and a place for them to belong. Recently, the students felt a need to help the community and their school. They hosted a tsunami penny drive, collecting pennies from the 30 classrooms, counting the money and then delivering the money to the local Red Cross. After this service project, the students wanted to do something to help the school and apply what they have learned with me about self esteem. The students found a school need and how they can help; they want to be student first aid leaders. The students want to equip themselves with Emergency Kits. They want to use these kits whenever there is a school-wide event and have a station for basic first aid. They have even decided to attend local first aid workshops available to them. When the school needs to be evaluated (either for real or practice) the students can bring their kits with them. The students have thoroughly thought out what they want to be able to do with Emergency Kits and even where they're to be placed. Please help the student leaders through Emergency Kits that they can proudly hold and provide positive leadership with their peers.
