My Project

My middle school students in their special education reading class are excited to choose the next book adventure! I am building the classroom read-aloud/think-aloud library with books from a variety of genres and book characters representative of my students and their interests. I want to include a fantasy book with a Latino character. Our school is near a Latino community. We have visited the local market on a class field trip. I chose Charlie Hernandez and the League of Shadows to introduce students to Latino fantasy, deepen their knowledge of our local community, and offer greater representation for Latino students to see their language and culture mirrored in the stories we explore. A positive self-image and attitude towards reading can help students develop stronger reading skills and reading habits.

Every class, students are given the opportunity to hear fluent reading and to volunteer to read, increasing their opportunities to practice their reading fluency and comprehension with the support of books that are typically above their reading level.

Hearing fluent reading and tracking what is read will help improve their overall reading skills and increase their exposure to more vocabulary and words they often recognize but can't read on their own. At the beginning of the school year, only a handful of students volunteered, usually the same 1-3 students. But now, all the students eagerly volunteer to read, opting not just for a sentence or two, but often a paragraph or even a whole page. Some are even stepping up to correct their peers' mispronunciation as everyone follows along.

The books I have selected for middle school students are books that other middle school students are reading. My students' reading level ranges between 1st-4th grade. Currently, I have Hatchet (adventure fiction), The Hunger Games (dystopian), and the Magic Fish (graphic novel).

Ms. Pa-Loo will only receive her materials if this project is fully funded by August 16.
