Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine tearing the tape off a thick test booklet to see a multiple choice state test for the first time. Imagine being lost in a blur of academic vocabulary that you, as a recent immigrant and English Language learner have never seen before but are expected to navigate your way through.

My students are full of hope and full of drive.

Despite being students in one of the most poverty-stricken areas in the United States, they have to know that they can achieve and that their big goals are achievable. They show me everyday how smart they are, and how much they want to learn, despite struggles with becoming proficient in English when many aren't yet proficient in their native language. They work hard so that they can ask me to hang their excellent work on the walls of our classroom, and they bring their parents to me to celebrate their progress as they and their siblings translate our meeting for their parents. They are so excited and driven to excel in school, but neither they nor our district can afford the necessary tools to transform our classroom into the most-effective learning environment that so many of our neighboring classrooms are privileged to have.

My Project

We are in the final stages of prepping for the California State Test. So many of my students are bordering jumping into the next score band, and I believe that an intensive test skills and academic vocabulary review will help them make the jump to the next score band. Students can rise from Far Below Basic to Below Basic, from Below Basic to Basic, from Basic to Proficient, and from Proficient to Advanced with some extra tools in their test-taking belt. Aside from the CST, these tools will help my students excel on future standardized tests such as the PSAT, the ACT, and the SAT. Help my students excel even more by donating to our project.

We need a ELMO document camera to display released CST questions and other aligned multiple-choice questions so that I can model Process of Elimination, Distracter Answers, and other test-taking strategies for my students.

We need a ELMO document camera to display exemplar student papers and to teach the process of revising and editing their CST essays together. My students are lacking test-taking strategies and editing strategies, and you can change that today.
