This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is beneficial to students, as this world is becoming more complicated and difficult to navigate. Social Emotional Learning projects increase self-awareness, academic achievement, and positive behaviors both in and out of the classroom. From an academic standpoint, students who participated in SEL programs saw an increase in their overall grades and better attendance. For this project I am requesting a copy of the book Elmer for all my students. I am also requesting art supplies to create a a portrait of themselves that includes self love and acceptance.

If he were ordinary elephant color, the others might stop laughing. That would make Elmer feel better, wouldn't it? David McKee's comical fable about everyone’s favorite patchwork elephant teaches readers to be themselves and celebrates the power of laughter.
I am requesting glue, paint brushes, colored tissue paper, markers and paint to complete the self portraits. with this project my students will be give the opportunity to express themselves without the use of words. The google wiggle eyes gives a child a chance to see the world through another’s eyes, social and emotional development and approaches to play and learning.
