Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is beneficial to students, as this world is becoming more complicated and difficult to navigate. Social Emotional Learning projects increase self-awareness, academic achievement, and positive behaviors both in and out of the classroom. From an academic standpoint, students who participated in SEL programs saw an increase in their overall grades and better attendance. For this project I am requesting a class set of the Elmer books that teach about self acceptance and originality. I am also requesting art supplies to create a a portrait of themselves that includes self love and acceptance.

Elmer the elephant is bright-colored patchwork all over.

No wonder the other elephants laugh at him!

If he were ordinary elephant color, the others might stop laughing. That would make Elmer feel better, wouldn't it? David McKee's comical fable about everyone’s favorite patchwork elephant teaches readers to be themselves and celebrates the power of laughter.

I am requesting glue, pencils, copy paper, and crayon boxes to complete the self portraits. With this project my students will be give the opportunity to express themselves without the use of words.

Lastly, I am requesting water bottle and lunch accessories for the students who eat in my classroom.
