Mr. Hamlett from Washington DC is requesting musical instruments through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students trumpets and trombones to begin their introduction to horns with a brass band. Horns are the next phase of their musical development as we’ve primarily focused on percussion instruments and keyboard. We hope to add woodwinds later!

My young budding musicians are energetic, fun, creative, and call one of the two most impoverished and underserved wards of DC “home”. They are enthusiastic about the music program we’ve built thusfar this year. They have produced three performances for the school and community, celebrating Hispanic heritage, Native American culture, and academic achievements at school. From non-verbal communicators diagnosed on the spectrum to our most fluent readers, every student takes and enjoys music at my elementary school. We dance, clap, sing, and create and learn rhythms and how to read music and produce different tones - they've mastered these concepts and the oldest are ready to take their talents to a new level!
These trumpets and trombones are intended for use by my fourth and fifth grade students, the oldest of the plethora of talent in their Title I school. This is my first year at the school and subsequently the first time they’ve had an instrumental music program and they are thrilled to find how much talent they have unlocked. The students have also expressed an anticipation of playing concert band instruments as I had requested some from the school at the beginning of the year, though these were never granted to us as the money was redirected. As a professional jazz brass player, I am eager to pique their musical curiosities by facilitating their music experience on a deeper and more technical level so that they are prepared as they move into middle school.
