Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The elementary school is one with a dynamic and diverse staff who work with dynamic and diverse students. 90% of the students are considered socioeconomically disadvantaged and over 50% are English Learners. Our school is not defined by these characteristics though. What you will see when you walk on campus are friendly teachers that are praising students and who follow our motto, "We Believe in You." This is stated each and every day to our children, and with our efforts, they now all believe in themselves. The students are happy, feel safe, and have an attitude that they can accomplish anything.
The staff has worked incredibly hard over the last year to specifically focus on strategies that are proven to help close the achievement gap with African American students.
Their efforts have paid off, and our African American students are now achieving at the same levels as the general population in Language Arts, and they have nearly closed the gap in Math.
My Project
University flags will be flown in front of every classroom. This will make the school one where it is an expectation that all students will go to college. The flags will be used on spirit days, pep-rallies, and in a college-day parade, all held at various times throughout the year.
Students will also be provided lessons to encourage them to learn more about the universities honored throughout the school.
One university will be chosen by each classroom to create a theme for each room, and students will create shirts and pennants to go with their homeroom college-boosting the college-going culture for students that might not realize that this is something they can attain.
