Every student at this elementary school has art class! This is a huge school, with nearly 1000 students and very little funding to support the arts. We use art to reinforce stem subjects and reinforce regular classroom teaching.
Our school has a HUGE and diverse population.
We are in a suburban area that loves and values art, especially visual art. Every student in this school of nearly 1000 children takes art classes. We study master artists, historically significant art work, culturally significant art work and art projects that support reading, writing, math and science. We use diverse media and methods, but art supplies are expensive, and we operate on a very tight budget. Projects like, 'Elementary Printmakers' become prohibitive as printmaking materials are beyond our reach.
My Project
We will be able to use and re-use the printmaking materials in our school to teach about architecture and communities to third graders, to teach about Benjamin Franklin and his printmaking shop in Philadelphia to fifth graders, to carve and learn about the ancient art of woodblock printing in Japan in sixth grade, and to study line and shapes in the lower grades. Bench-hooks and gouges are expensive art supplies that can be recycled year to year, so they will become a permanent part of our integrated art curriculum!
We've never had gouges or bench hooks.
We've printed collographs and made due with variations of printmaking, but never been able to afford the traditional art supplies needed for true block printmaking. This will afford the students insight into a very old art technique that is culturally and historically significant, and teach then a new skill that they can turn into a creative piece of art!
