My students need to be interested in what they are reading in the target language, German. The classroom readers available to us are not interesting to my students. Magazines such as Das Rad are current topics.

My Students

I am a German teacher at the high school level. My German classroom is a mixture of 9-12 grade students, mostly 9th grade.

I am looking to increase the current events and cultural knowledge and lessons within my classroom.

I am combating cell phones and social media and would like to introduce a Scholastic magazine which features more teenage-friendly topics while in German.

My students are living in an area of changing demographics. The learning of language is essential to get them ahead for college preparations.

My Project

Reading is an essential part of teaching and helping students to acquire German language mastery. Finding reading material in the target language is often difficult to acquire. Textbook readers and reading pieces within the curriculum are typically viewed as uninteresting to the student population.

Finding classroom reading material that is interesting and engaging to students in the target language, at the beginner's level, is difficult.

Scholastic language reading magazines solve this difficult task. Articles, games, and puzzles are all published in each issue in the target language, German. These articles, games, and puzzles all pertain to current events, pop culture, and other subjects which are interesting to students.
