Eighth Graders Teach Kindergarten Readers Using Pictures

My students need 39 picture books to learn how to teach kindergartners how to read.

My Students

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."--Dr.Seuss. Reading helps my eighth graders connect to kindergartners just like Dr. Seuss has for years.

My students attend a small rural school in Oregon.

This year, I have 38 students in the eighth grade. The students have little exposure to reading materials. Buying books or using the library is almost non-existent. Many of the parents did not graduate from high school themselves, so the involvement in the educational system is sketchy. With the lack of education, there are a high percentage of families that qualify for the free and reduced lunch program.

My Project

Having a wide variety of picture books in the classroom helps students develop self-confidence in their reading without being intimidated by the text. It's important that my eighth graders feel confident in their reading before trying to teach kindergartners to love reading. Along with building confidence, picture books are the primary source of reading materials for kindergartners, so my eighth graders need to know how to connect with emergent readers and teach them decoding, tracking, visualization, inference, and questioning reading strategies. In the process of teaching the kindergartners, my students learn how communicate with others, become aware of their own learning difficulties and develop strategies to help other struggling or first time readers. My students make connections with those kindergartners and become role models. It's great to see the improvement in both ages.

Middle school and kindergarten students' development has a lifelong impact on their approach an attitude towards reading and education.

It's my goal to find a way to engage and excite them in reading that will last a lifetime.
