Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Students will create an Egyptian sarcophagus out of clay. This project will be part of a larger 6th grade Egyptian unit in social studies. Students will learn about Egyptian culture and art by looking at imagery from ancient Egypt. They will learn about ceramic processes, techniques and vocabulary in creating a clay slab sarchophagus. I am the art teacher at an elementary school in Chicago in a low income neighborhood. Right now we are on probation. Our students need exposure to vocabulary and hands-on exciting learning. This project will allow students to learn about art elements by doing, while also integrating social studies with art. Approximately 80 students would participate in the sarcophagus project. I think this would be a lasting experience for the students because they will have a finished product that they made showing everything they learned about ancient Egypt. It will be a lidded box to put their important things in with their face and name in hieroglyphics on it. I would appreciate the funding because currently my budget is very low due to due to budget cuts. My need for materials is for clay, some acrylic paint, and a few clay tools. I have found that many kids who are unmotivated in school really become involved when working with clay. I have had a great success rate in these kinds of projects.
