Egyptian Novel

My students need copies of Diary of a Country Prosecutor, a novel by renowned Egyptian playwright Tawfik al-Hakim, to conclude our Middle Eastern Literature unit.

My Students

This engaging novel follows a Legal Officer in rural Egypt as he attempts to solve crimes and navigate a huge and alienated bureaucracy. Filled with irony and dark humor, the novel explores the rich tapestry of humanity as we all try to navigate a complex and often alienating world.

My students are college preparatory seniors at a public high school in Maine who are studying world literature.

We will be reading a collection of short fiction from Egypt which will serve as a microcosm for our study of the literature of the Middle East. They are eager to learn about other cultures.

My Project

Tawfik Al-Hakim worked as a prosecutor and drew upon his life experiences to write this novel,richly detailed with believable characters from a corrupt and lusty mayor, to a Hamletesque indigent who the reader senses is only feigning madness. What novel would be complete with out a saucy prostitute and a beautiful, innocent young maiden? The protagonist suffers from moments of clarity and anguish of conscience as he goes about his business at all hours of the day and night plodding through a mire of bureaucracy and delicate egos in an attempt to investigate crimes. I burst out laughing quite frequently while reading this novel, but the humor is cynical and dry revealing a satiric look at a corrupt society where “justice and the people are just words whose significance are unknown . . . they are just phrases whose only purpose is to be written on paper and delivered in orations, like many other words and moral attributes whose existence is not tangibly felt” (133).

Help my students see beyond the stereotypes of the Arab world by funding this great novel.

This book will help them see beyond the media images of radical Islamic fundamentalists and see into the lives of real people just like them who just want to live a peaceful life and do good work.
