Egg-cellent Learning – a Schoolyard Chicken Experience
Help me give my students essential equipment for our school chicken coop, allowing elementary students to engage in hands-on learning by feeding, caring for, and observing chickens while developing responsibility, teamwork, and an understanding of agriculture.
This project will provide essential equipment for our school chicken coop, allowing elementary students to engage in hands-on learning by feeding, caring for, and observing chickens while developing responsibility, teamwork, and an understanding of agriculture.
By participating in daily chicken care, students will develop responsibility, teamwork, and an understanding of sustainable agriculture.
An automatic feeder ensures consistent food supply, especially in summer, reinforcing planning and animal care. A smaller hanging feeder allows students to take an active role in daily feeding. Chain and hardware secure the feeder, and storage totes protect extra food. An egg basket connects students to food production.
A chicken playground provides enrichment, encouraging natural behaviors like perching and foraging. Mealworms allow students to hand-feed chickens, creating meaningful interactions, while gardening gloves ensure safety during coop maintenance and egg collection. These tools make learning hands-on, fostering confidence and problem-solving skills.
The chicken coop is also an integral part of our outdoor classroom, where students engage in active, experiential learning about science, sustainability, and life cycles. Our specials team incorporates this project into lessons, reinforcing academic standards in meaningful ways.
This project teaches responsibility, problem-solving, and agricultural literacy while strengthening observational and critical-thinking skills.
Our students are naturally curious and thrive with hands-on learning. Many have limited exposure to agriculture, making this project a unique opportunity to connect classroom lessons with real-world experiences, fostering lifelong skills and curiosity.
