My students are all learning English as a second, third, or fourth language. Our population hails from numerous countries, speaks more than a dozen first languages and experiences every walk of life. In spite of their differences, these learners share a desire to gain literacy, grow academically, and graduate from high school.
My students look around our classroom and see a reflection of the world.
Like most adolescents, they are constantly looking at screens. They lack the focus and stamina that can only be harnessed through independent reading. Thus, I am trying to build a classroom library offering books that are relevant and relatable to my teenage students in whom I hope to develop a love of reading.
My Project
The requested books in this project will provide choice mentors via the main characters. The books will be used in countless book projects as we continue to develop a culture of reading in our English classroom.
The books selected for this project all focus on a single character having to make a seemingly impossible choice.
Examples include "Nine Doors", Tunnel Vision", and "He Forgot to Say Goodbye".
By increasing the reading interest through student choice, we empower students to improve their reading abilities. This skill will serve them for the rest of their lives and improve their communities through a more educated and creative young adult population. These kids are the future of our community and country. Let's give them the best foundation possible!
