This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The AP Environmental Science (APES) exam is a standardized exam offered internationally, giving students the chance to earn college credit while being in high school. All students who take the APES exam take the same exam on the same day, regardless of the differences in their previous educational or test-taking experiences, or their access to educational resources.
However, the ability to prepare for AP exams is a problem of equity—students who have the means to purchase additional exam preparation materials will be at an advantage compared to students who don't.
To prepare for this exam, students who come from more affluent backgrounds are able to buy exam preparation books from one or more textbook-publishing companies, which consist of topic summaries, practice exam problems, and full-length practice exams. Meanwhile, over 80% of our student body is economically disadvantaged.
As much as I do my best to prepare my students in the classroom, our school's 8-period schedule means I only have them for a total of 198 minutes per week, which is less than what many other APES students across the world have. There isn't enough time during class to properly and thoroughly do everything I want to do with my students—cover all the APES content, practice test-taking skills, review past exam content, and administer several full-length practice exams. Our students are smart and capable, but I would love for each of them to have their own APES exam prep book so they can have access to additional resources that their peers across the country have in order to be better prepared for the AP exam come May.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
