Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students in the functional life skills program range in age from 14-22 and present with diagnosed intellectual disabilities similar to moderate cognitive impairments. They travel to and from high school with door to door transportation; due to their cognitive limitations, and the dangerous risks involved in traveling across the city via public transportation.
We aspire to teach our students the necessary adaptive and functional life skills to be happy, successful, and contributing members of society.
Our students become "employees" in the school run Copy Center. They work recycling within the school and deliver water to classrooms. They provide coffee to the teachers. They also cook in the kitchen and do laundry.
Academically, it is vital for our students to gain the knowledge needed to be successful active members in society. They need to be able to access public transportation, make the appropriate change at a store, and to request help or clarification. Self care is a basic skill that needs to be explicitly taught and practiced. They are truly an incredible group, and we are so lucky and thankful to have a this group of learners that are excited and ready to learn.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting are necessary to improving our Life Skills classroom. Presently, the refrigerator we use within the classroom does not shut entirely. You can imagine that this isn't the most ideal closing method. It is also missing glass shelves to cover the vegetable bins. We have no griddles among our baking and cooking supplies. There is not a wheelchair accessible for the students on our floor. This is a critical need because we have students with seizure disorders and they are often transported post seizure to nurses office on a different floor!
By donating to our project, you will not only be improving the students' experiences within the classroom with materials that will be used regularly, but you will ultimately be supporting the growth of the program as we work hard to broaden our visibility and our presence in our building.
Please consider donating to our classroom project. I have seen how hands-on life skills training positively affects my students' transition to successful independent living. I hope by obtaining these materials for the life skills classroom, they will help us grow even more!
