Edible Roman Roads!

Help me give my students an engaging and tasty way to build their own replica of the famous ancient Roman roads.

My Project

I love to see my students' depth of understanding increase when we are able to spend time learning with hands-on activities. It's also important to me to keep the learning environment fun and engaging.

In our ancient Rome unit, we will learn about how the extensive network of roads across ancient Rome impacted the civilization in many ways.

These roads were used by the Roman military to conquer distant territories and expand their empire, to spread new religions & languages, for trade with other civilizations, and to exchange ideas.

The way these ancient Roman roads, like the Via Appia, were engineered and constructed has allowed some of them to remain in use for over two thousand years! With our sweet road-building supplies we will start with a layer of bedrock (graham cracker) and line the edges with a curb (mini marshmallows). Next, we will top the bedrock with crushed rock mixed with concrete (frosting). Then, we will add a light layer of pebbles (sprinkles) and finally add the top layer of smooth paving stones (Chex), arranged in a grid pattern.

The Romans even had mile-markers (mini-flag toothpicks) so that travelers could keep track of their location within the vast empire.

Last, our gummy bear soldiers can take it for a test drive...er a horse-pulled chariot ride?!
