Edible Cells Made of Candy Organelles!

My Project

Every year at the beginning of the second semester, I teach my sixth graders a unit on cells and their organelles. It's an introduction to a unit that will explore many "living things" including body systems and disease and immunity. To start this unit, it important for students to understand that cells and their production is vital to the make up of the human body and how it performs.

Getting my sixth graders "hooked" on this topic is easy when you create edible cells!

Our edible cells will have students learning all of cell organelles in no time, but it is not a cost-effective activity to do. It is my goal to make this project come alive by providing my students with various types of candy that they can use to make various organelles. After learning about the different parts of a cell, students will list and defend why they choose certain candies to represent the different organelles in their cells. I am also requesting a new desk that will serve as an area that will house of candies as we make the cells ad will also be utilized as a small group area. Please help make this project become a reality so we can create edible cells!
